Counting letters/spaces for the average word

1. When taking a typing test how many letters/spaces represent a word? (Letters include everything on a keyboard that can be typed)

2. When counting the words in a page of written/typed text how many letters/spaces represent an average word, for counting purposes?

I know there's writers out there that can answer these question. I'll be waiting to here from you.

Thanks

Sam

In high school in 1971 we were taught 5 spaces made a word.  If the first line is indented, you manually count the words of that sentence.  Then go to the second sentence and count them.  Multiply that number by 27 (lines on a page) unless it's shorter than 27 lines.  Then add the 5 spaces of the first sentence.

Good luck on the typing test.  Are you doing it on a computer?  If so, Microsoft Word has a word count under tools, I believe.

I recently went to a new doctor and noticed he was located in something called the Professional Building. I felt better right away.

Sorry, not my area of expertise.
