What could cause the following problem: I start my computer and it works great until i connect the computer to the Internet. After i connect the computer no software would work, yet i still have access to the hard disc. after a couple of minutes that the problem continues the computer starts to work normally and all the software's work great. (If i don't connect the computer to the Internet the software's work great)??????
There is never a good time to buy a new computer.
Are you connecting via dial-up or broadband (cable modem, DSL, etc)?

I'm using a modem.
Try this: Have the computer startup in safe mode. Now try connecting to the Internet. Post with results. I'll be happy to continue helping.
From experience this is probably one (or both) of the following:
1. Windows update is consuming your resources.
2. Your Anti-virus program is updating and consuming your viruses (Kaspersky?).
This problem may also be related to the fact that you have little memory left (how large is your memory? I recommend 1GB for WindowsXP).
To test these theories, install ProcessExplorer (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx) and sort the processes by their CPU utilization. You may see the culprit in the form of svchost.exe. If this is the case, hover over it with your mouse and look for "Automatic Updates". It is most likely to appear if this is a Windows Update issue.
If you post your conclusions it would be possible to help further.

As you're using a modem -- and thus not behind NAT or a hardware firewall, as you would be if using a residential router with a broadband connection -- make sure you have a software firewall active on your system. Make sure you have active malware protection and countermeasures in place there, as well. With comprehensive protection in place, verify the integrity of your system, by running a series of checks and scans. At this point, you may wish to optimize your system by disabling any unnecessary services [ run : services.msc ] and startup applets [ run : msconfig.exe ]. Ensure that all relevant networking code -- drivers, OS, etc. -- is up to date on your system, and see if this rectifies the problem.
