Computer help

I keep getting this error on my PC that says WARNING SPYWARE DETECTED ON YOUR COMPUTER RUN SYPWARE  OR ANTIVIRUS TOOLS NOW.  Then my pc will go to a blue dos screen with different problems such as bogus driver etc.  I have installed Norton 2008 and PC Doctor Spyware and ran both and they cleaned up my pc but I still have this warning prompt when windows boots up at the desktop.  Also the desktop themes will not load.  Please help.

Hi Samantha. You should try running both scans again, only this time, boot your computer in safe-mode (Repeatedly press F8 at startup and choose safe mode). It will be even better if you have a rescue disc and boot your computer using it. You see, some spywares will load and hide on startup, even before you had the chance to look for them. This way, you may find other spywares which were hidden before.

Hi Samantha,

The first answer from aaron2 is a really good place to start.  However, if this doesn't rid your system of the problem, it would help if you could add a bit more information.  What type of computer, what operating system are the two most important.  Then, when did you install Norton 2008, before or after this message began to appear?  Did you visit any websites that you wouldn't normally go to before this problem started?  Did you get an e-mail with attachment(s) from someone you don't know, or an unexpected e-mail from someone you do know?   These questions help narrow things down a bit.

If you're running Windows XP or Vista and you purchased your system from a major vendor or reseller, there could be recovery software such as GoBack.  This would allow you to restore your system to a particular date, like the day before this message began appearing.  There are also different recovery options in different versions of Windows, so knowing which version you have will also make it possible to determine what option of Safe Mode would be best to enter.

Good luck with this.

I installed Norton after the problem.. the pc is a dell dimension E521.  It is still going to a dos blue screen and you have to hit the space bar to get it to return then the resolution is all changed and windows gives you a red balloon to return it to normal.

Hi Samantha,

Sorry to take so long in replying.  When you installed Norton, did it give any warnings or errors?  Did you make a recovery disk when the installation was completed?

From what you're describing, it sounds like your computer is booting into safe mode, then reloading the proper drivers after it passes the blue screen.  Is this what's happening?  If it's going to safe mode, it will tell you and it will be mentioned on your screen.

I think at this point you want to boot to safe mode, pretty sure it's by pressing F8 key before the Windows screen comes up, and selecting safe mode as the startup option.  Once there, run Norton and see if it catches anything.  Once done, reboot your computer normally and see what happens.

If that doesn't work, then you want ot go to the MS Update site and select the malicious software removal tool, and only that.  It runs after your computer is rebooted.  It's supposed to detect any root kit virus's and try to clean them, and let you know the results when it's finished.  If it is a root kit type, you probably want to run the system restore and be done with it.  If there are any files, photos, or anything else on your computer that can't be replaced and you would be very sad to lose, back them up first, because system restores usually take you back to the very beginning, like when you got the computer out of the box and first started it.
