how to dispose of an old computer - computer doesn't work at all - can I take the hard drive out and smash it before taking it to the recycling center

This is what I did. I took out the hard drive and brought the rest of the computer to Best Buy for disposal. It cost $10, but they gave me a $10 BB gift card in return. It worked for me.  Laughing

As an aside, I did disassemble the hard drive (no easy task) just to see the insides. After it was all apart I dumped the parts in the trash.

As an engineer I can tell you that the hard drive is quite beautifully crafted....a marvel.
