Complicated divorce and bankruptcy

divorce/bankruptcy     A relative of mine is going through a divorce. Since the start of the divorce his ex was paying half the house payment She said she is going to quit paying because she don't live there anymore. It was her decision to leave. The house is up for sale but in this market and no equity it probably won't sell. Now the divorce is comming up real soon and I am afraid she is going to stick him with all the bills aquired by both . In my opinion she is trying to get out scott free and stick him totally. Now my question is what would happen if he filed for bankruptcy before the divorce is final. Would it screw up her credit too or would he have to pay even more after the divorce and she still gets away free. I have offered to loan him the money so what I want to know is it better spent on the divorce or the bankruptcy lawyer I don't have enough to loan for both only about 1200 bucks. I should add that he has lost his job so he cannot even afford to pay the basic bills alone. It's actually more compicated than that but thats the short story of it. Thanks Rick
