Colposcopy affecting menstrual period?

about 2 weeks ago, i had a colposcopy performed. i had the normal bleeding/discharge from it..which was dark brown/red. it stopped for a couple days and was rarely light, almost like spotting. i was scheduled to started my period November 10th or 11th but never got it. I had a very little bit of blood that appeared to be from my procedure, probably because i started having sexual intercourse again 48 hours after the procedure....but no cramps occured. On November 13th I began having period cramps and all i'm getting it spotting..it's not really bleeding at all. The only time i get the blood is when i wipe when i go to the bathroom and it isn't very much. I'm not sure if this is normal for the colposcopy to mess your period up or not?? I took a pregnancy test on November 14th since i am about 4 days late, it came up negative. Can anyone give me any explanation as to why i'm experiencing this?????????

Dear Jada,

The following is advice on care after the Colposcopy procedure.  After reading it please contact your doctor.

Aftercare

If a biopsy was done, there may be a dark vaginal discharge afterwards. After the sample is removed, the doctor applies Monsel's solution to the area to stop the bleeding. When this mixes with blood, it creates a black fluid that looks like coffee grounds. This fluid may be present for a couple of days after the procedure. It is also normal to have some spotting after colposcopy. Pain-relieving medication can be taken to lessen any postprocedural cramping.

Patients should not use tampons, douche, or have sex for at least a week after the procedure (or until the doctor says it is safe) because of the risk of infection.
