Hi,
I am not entirely sure but I think it's an expresion that says something like: "There are several things that our society shouldn't tolerate but for some reason (e.g: comfort, politics,....) we prefer to be blind and not to see it (so we ignore it)". Please, cross-check it, I would hate to give you a wrong answer.
