Can anyone suggest software for creating collaborative visual performance art?

That's an interesting question, but I'm afraid I don't think I understand what you mean. Are you talking about something like

Vusic, but with the ability to connect a few computers and work on the same animation at the same time?

Well it is sort of like Vusic, but more as a production collarboration that ends up in a single performance.  Terje is a outdoor performance art event in Yokohama in November. We would liket to post the images we produce for the show and let people download them, create their own, add own material and repost it for us to incorporate them into the show. What we need is some tools that allow the users/artists to share, test, view and get a sense of what their material would look like in the bigger context.

What exactly do you mean by collaborative performance art? Performers can collaborate without the help of software. Do you mean software which interacts between the virtual and physical on stage? When I was messing with sort of stuff many years ago we used macromedia director to project footage and cue various devices such as lights, smoke machines etc. over a DMX interface.

A guy called Hal from Jim Henson Company was working on a system called Helix a few years ago which he used to do a virtual cabaret. Basically there would be a puppeteer offstage who was able to animate a computer generated character in real time through a physical input device. This character was able to interact with the audience spontaniously via a data projector.

I dont know if this hit the mark because your question is very vague and ambiguous.
