The first banknote was issued in China, when the coins were to heavy for merchants to carry around. The coins were then left to keep by a person that the merchant trusted, and got a piece of paper confirming the amount of money that was deposited.

According to that, the first banknote was more valuable then a coin, since it represented a large amount of coins.
