Cochlear implants

Hello, I am scheduled for a cochlear implant in 2 weeks and I am very unsure if I want it. My situation is one that i have had MANY surgeries for infection and the last two were to close my ear canals. My ENT recommends I get the cochlear BUT, I have a horrible immune system and I will have to go in the hospital two days ahead and stay for indefinate period and get IV Antibiotics. I have a history of PSEUDOMONAS and MRSA, my last surgery was on July 16th 2009. I am just starting to get better and I am able for the first time in years to function like a normal adult , oh yeah I am 50. Before with all the infections and surgeries I was pretty much stuck in bed. Now I am taking care of my house,my husband and being pretty darn independent and I like it. My right ear has a very little bit of hearing and I can by using AMPLIFIED telephones hear on the phone and watch TV with headphones . My dilemma is, the Dr. I have will NOT put it on my left side he insist on the right, so if I have problems and as he said "if it doesn't work the first time we can re-implant" this means ANY chance of me hearing on the phone or TV which I know doesn't sound like much but to me it is is gone. I would like some advice.”

If you have even the slightest doubt about the cochlear implant , don't go for it.  Your subconscious is trying to tell you something.  This is major surgery that may expose you to further infections such as Pseudomonas and MRSA.  With your weakened immune system, the next infection is going to cause further harm to your body or may even kill you.  Doctors often have their own personal agenda, much of which may well be financial in nature.  Just remember, surgeons are contractors that get paid on a per case basis.  That means the more surgeries that they perform, the more money they make.  If you have no hearing at all in your left ear, but you can hear a little on your right, the logical choice location for your first implant should be on the left.  Based on your description, it sure sounds like your doctor is trying to bully you into getting implants on BOTH ears.  If not having the implant will not affect your health in any way, I think you should tell the doctor that you want to wait a year or two before you decide what you want to do.  This will give you plenty of time to think this through.

First of all how well do you hear with out it? You have a few options here. I highly recommend the cochlear implant. My wife was born deaf and after getting the implant she was exposed to a whole new culture and way of life and she has been happy ever since getting it. It does take a while for your body to get use to the implant but not so long that you have to worry about your immune system causing problems. You should however get it in the EAR THAT YOU WANT. not your doctors. Tell him you are going to seek another doctor there are usually several other places you can have this surgery even if you have to travel out of state it would be worth it to find a doctor who you can trust and will put it in the ear that you want it in. For my wife they wanted to put it in the ear she heard the best with so they put it in the right but she had the choice to put it in either ear as should you.  Good luck and tell us all how it goes.
