First, the material that is used today is a mix of cotton and polyester. 100% wool was used at that time and is uncomfortable, hot, and thick. However they way it was sewn was all by hand and would have lasted forever. Today since what we wear is usually a mix as I said of cotton and polyester and is mass produced in factories from other countries. We do have 100% wool and cotton products but they refined so they aren't as thick, heavy,or uncomfortable as before. And if your wondering about the undergarments, they were the style of longjohns as are worn in winter and yes they were made of 100% wool. I hope this answered your question satisfactorily.

Not true! Clothes were made of linen (the Egyptians grew cotton for linen and woven cloth.)  The new Americans also had silk from China and combinations of linen, cotton, and wool woven fabrics. Garments closed with ties, laces, and buttons.  The wealthier the person the finer their attire. Women wore straw bonnets and men wore beaver fur hats. We do the same thing today but straw hats are made in  many styles for women and men. Beaver fur is still  used to make men's hats-especially western hats.  Fur of all types is still used for trim and for coats but are worn as much for style as for warmth. People still layer garments to be comfortably warm or cool. The biggest difference is the between people now and then is the adhearance to perscribed rules of dress.  Now the attitude seems to be "anything goes."  "Anything" doesn't always go and a wise person learns what is appropriate and what is not.  Dressing for then occasion shows respect for the host (or boss) and others.  It is certainly always appreciated-now as in the past.

Mr.Winnefrog sir I stand corrected. I can't argue with your facts , however I beleive she was referring to the time of the civil war and i don't think or beleive that the soldiers of that time wore Hanes boxers or briefs. Their unforms were heavy, hot, and uncomfortable. But I must say you are sir right about the fabrics. Any disspute I have sir with what you know or said is with the utmost respect. Thankyou

They wore many more layers of clothing and the clothing covered more of the body.  That's the short answer.
