Dear Mary,
Not knowing the entire history; the only thing I can say with 100% certainty is you should call your vet to get the pup checked.
Where is the pup's Mother? Natural is always the best choice. If I read the question correctly this pup is 1 week and 1 day old?
If you purchased this puppy; you should be entitled to a refund from the seller. The chances for a puppy to lead a healthy, normal life are very poor when taken from it's mother and the rest of the litter too soon. They need nutrients from their Mother and socialization from the other pups in their litter. This is a disturbing scenerio that happens when unscrupulous people get greedy.
If the seller gives you a hard time recruit an advocate from your local Humane Shelter.
Regardless of the outcome, if you purchased the puppy from a pet store or breeder... Please report them to your local Humane shelter and the Better Business Beauro. Good breeders would never sell such a young pup. And the cleft palet could be a birth defect caused by improper breeding practices. Which means the chances are high for other sick puppies and this should be investigated.
God bless you and this poor little pup.
