If you really want to do a good job at it I think you are better off removing the strings, you will be happy you did it when you are done, trust me...

Take a short piece of wood or a thin stick, cover its tip with a scrap of cloth and remove the dirt from the fretboard. After that pour some lemon oil or similar and oil the wood.

 good luck

I've been playing guitar since 1970.....here's my suggestion:  use q-tips lightly dampened with Windex, always worked for me.  Also, if you play alot, ALWAYS change your strings...I change my strings once a month.  And when changing strings....change them one at a time...NEVER remove all of the strings at once.

If you find the q-tips too small you can take any stick and cover it's tip with a cotton ball then you will have a larger surface.

Whatever you do, DO NOT remove all of the strings at the same time.  You can destroy the neck of the guitar!

Hey Dave,

Just to let you know....you should NEVER remove all of your guitar strings at the same time.  It could damage the neck and truss rod on the guitar.  This is a well known FACT among serious guitarists.  It also is the recommendation of guitar and bass manufacturers.
