Church garden.

We have about an acre of pasture we'd like to use as a community garden, all produce going to the food bank.

We're in Western Washington, cool wet winters, mild summers with a moderate 90-degree dry spell from July to September. Sadly, the only water we can expect is rainfall.

I wanted to plant two crops: May 2010, sweet corn. Harvest in 45 days? Then rototill the soil, inocculate with rhizobium and plant broccoli in late July, harvest in two cuttings, September and late November. Then rototill and re-inocculate for corn again in May, and sugar snap peas in August.

How should I proceed?  I don't know that I can expect much help from the Church: most of the congregation is over sixty and few are active gardeners.

First of all corn is a waste of time and won't do well in your climate. You will get little yield and corn is cheap when your crop is ready. If you are doing this to supply a food pantry I would plant green beans, peppers, tomatoes- both cherry and regular. When it is cool in spring plant cold weather crops like spinach, and other cool weather crops. You can seed carrots, radishes, etc. Rototilling should be fine unless the ground is hard. If the ground is hard add bales of peat moss. It will be worth the investment. I'm 60 and still plant but use a seat so don't count out your members. Then send out a note to ask all grandchildren and children to help plant. Plant onion sets and potatoes. Your potato crop will loosen the soil. Involve your community to help for a good cause. You can use small plants and ask your garden center to donate. Good luck.

Have you thought about putting an ad in some local shop windows to ask for volunteers? Sell it to them as some healthy outside fun.

Such a great idea. Good luck
