here is a link that is definitely more intresting than Wikipedia - you can decide if it is true of not.   They say the Xmas tree is originally a Animistic ritual to call back the ancestor spirits from the forest

Wow! I got a thumbs down on my answer. Perhaps I misunderstood the question in the way it was asked. I responded to what is the significance of the Christmas tree.

In looking upon this question I have a feeling you want to know what it means to us as a person.

If that is so, this is what it means to me.

The Angel or star on top signifies the light that guided the wise men to the birth place of Jesus. The lights are the stars that brightened the night for easier travel. The ornaments are what we add for brightness and often as a memento of special events, dates or people in our lives.

Plus they just add beauty to the season and our homes.
