How can you love your neighbor as yourself if you don't like yourself?

The road to nowhere is paved with good intentions.

Well, I would say it's as simple as that.. You can't love your neighbor if you don't first love yourself. Like the blind leading the blind, they will both fall in a ditch. We can't give what we do not have.

Please distinguish between love and like. We are commanded to love our neighbor, we may not like our neighbor, but we can still love them. You say you don't like yourself. Ask yourself why. All of us dislike ourselves at one time or another.

I can say that you love yourself because you want your life and yourself to be good.

Victims of circumstance owe it to fate. Victims of choice owe it to themselves.

To paraphrase M. Scott Peck, to love is the be willing to leave one's comfort zone and to do what ever is necessary to assist in another's (or one's own) growth toward completeness, wholeness, peace; toward being the person that GOD desires.

Isn't it wonderful that nowhere in Scripture do we read any command or suggestion about liking that idiotic, loud, rude, overbearing, and obnoxious person that passes himself off as our neighbor? GOD is so good.

God did not give me the spirit of fear, but that of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.  11Timothy 1:7

I always heard that to love someone else, we must first love ourselves.  However, doing good deeds and showing friendliness to your neighbor will possibly assist you in loving yourself.  Oft times those neighbors who are hard to love are those who need love the most. A visit to that cranky old man or woman across the street could result in a lasting friendship.  I believe that what makes us love ourselves is doing for others.  I disagree with Jay, we are suppose to love our neighbors regardless of them being obnoxious, loud, rude or overbearing.  We express our love (don't have to love their habits), and let God deal with the rest.  Lv. 19-18 says, Love thy neighbor as thyself.  Examine yourself carefully and see what it is about yourself that you don't love, after all is said and done, you may find many things you like about yourself, things that are worth sharing with your neighbor.

"They said it couldn't be done, but He did it!"

You may not "like" yourself (find yourself falling short in many ways), but certainly what God is requiring of us is easy to understand, and actually might be helped by us having a low opinion of ourselves, namely:  Be forgiving (considering thyself as needing often forgiveness of God and others), do good, be kind, do no evil.  That's easy to understand, and all mankind should aim to do so.
