Choosing a sewing machine

Well, I've been making some soft toys and purses over the past several month and now I'm a little tired of sewing everything by hand and I want to get a sewing machine.

So doing some research I found good reviews about "brother" company that has pretty good money for value that are simple and easy to use. I expected to spend about 150$ on one of the beginner machines.

Then today, going to visit my neighbors, they told me they are leaving and also said they are selling their industrial sewing machine for 350$. I can spend that money now, and I know the industrial one would last longer and would sew better - but it's very hard for me to decide which way to go.

Is there anyone here who have sewing experience and know which path would be better?

it may come down to the kind of material you will keep sewing with.  I'm definately not an expert in this but have done some sewing, and i believe the industrial types can handle thicker material like leather and so forth.  so weigh the costs, if you plan on using heavier stuff down the road, it may be a good deal.  but i know even store brand/basic sewing machines can get the job done too, without all the bells and whistles.!

first question-do you need a zigzag stitch? if so, does the industrial machine have one. some do not.

The thing about a real industrial machine is that they are built to last, have no plastic gears and do not break down easily.

2nd question-does your neighbor have the manual? if not check the internet to see if you can buy it online. A good manual is critical. It will tell you how to use your machine, how to maintain it and what to do when something goes wrong.

If you are only doing straight sewing, an older mechanical machine would serve you best. They are easy to use, maintain and fix.

The older machines generally can sew through several layers of soft leather, 8 or 9 layers of heavy denim as well as silk and chiffon. The Key is the needle and the thread. Never use the cheap stuff found in the dollar store, and use the needle designed for the fabric. Schmedts and Organ are the 2 top needle makers and have needle specifically for denim and leather. A sewing machine manual usually will tell you which thread to use and what needle for each fabric.

I'm sure that there is a online shop in the internet that sells sewing machines.. Why don't you take a look first.. Maybe you will save some money if you that..
