Choosing a New Web Hosting Plan

I've been shopping for a new web host. I am confused about the bandwidth history of my current host. What is the difference between incoming and outgoing traffic? Last month my incoming traffic was 53.45 GB and my outgoing was 4.70 GB.

When I get a new host, what's wrong with shared hosting? Why do people pay extra for dedicated? Is it just if you have web applications that require processing power?

is media temple's gs a good option?

when dreamhost or hostmonster seem to offer more for less?

I'm hosting mainly static pages with some PHP 4, and using osCommerce. currently paying $150/month for dedicated hosting seems like too much.

Can anyone recommend the best hosting plan/company for me?

I'm confused as well. The only time incoming should be higher than outgoing is if everyone is uploading files to your site but no one is downloading them.

As for the difference between shared and dedicated, it's the difference between having a computer to yourself and sharing it with many others whom may or may not do something stupid to bring down the whole server. In addition, the more traffic your site gets the more CPU cycles it will use, so if you're getting that much traffic many hosting companies may not let you on a shared server as you'll cause it to run slower for the other customers.

I've heard both good and bad about MT over the years, but I've never dealt with MT myself so I can't really vouch for their service.

For something of this magnitude I'd recommend getting a quote from The Planet and from Rackspace. Both are top of the line companies that are sure to be able to handle anything you throw at them.

what do you mean something of this magnitude?

many shared hosting plans offer 1TB+ bandwidth monthly, so why do i need a dedicated plan?

Hello, Your incoming traffic is what your site visitors have used while visiting your site. Outgoing traffic is what you yourself have used while uploading pages etc to your web host.

A dedicated server is one with just your site alone on it. Most people opt for shared because of the cost factor but shared may have as many as 300-400 sites contained thereon.

If you own more than one site then your may like to consider a Reseller plan that offers multiple site hosting for one cheap rate.

I have never dealt with the sites you mentioned so cannot vouch for them myself. I have been using Hostifex for many years now and there support is top notch.

Fat Cow is a highly rated affordable host, you get a free domain name and their prices are very reasonable (60 bucks are year or so) you can check out a review of them and many other hosts at top web hosting I hope this helps, good luck with your search.

May be worth while choosing a web hosting company that is local to you or your country. You can benefit from better connection rates for you and your local customer and rank better in local search engine listings. UK Web Hosting

I would seriously check out Fat Cow .  Great hosting company, $66 per year.  I have heard nothing but good things about them.

Also, if you are confused about the different types of hosting, here is some info about the advantages of dedicated hosting

I hope this helps.
