Chevron (harringbone)crochet pattern

my daughter and i are trying to make her a crocheted summer dress in the striped chevron pattern. the patter is 5 sc/dc. How do you know if you are to single or double crochet? the pattern doesnt say anything about when to use either or. it is from the 2008 pattern a day calander for february 5. if anyone can get us started it would be great.  i know how to do the pattern, but dont want to get her going and it be wrong or she will never finish it and then i will have to (haha) that is not in my plans. thanks  ladibugg62
