Science homework on balancing our chemical equations:
Copper Oxidizes to form green patina
__ Cu + __O2 = __CuO2
Product ______________________
Reactants ________________ _____________________
Can someone explain what exactly I'm trying to find and how to come up with the answers? Google is useless to me. Thanks

Hi Casteel, ----------- I think you are wrong. The equation should be Cu + O2 = CuO (NOT CuO2.... cause Cu is +2, not +4). Now the balance is 2Cu+O2=2CuO (as you suggested it is straight 1Cu + 1O2 = 1CuO2). The products is CuO (Copper oxide) and the reactants are Cu (copper) and O2 (oxygen). The idea is to balance the numbers: there are 2 Cu, 2 O in each side. You reach it as follws: Start with Cu + O2 = CuO ----- on the left there are 2 O (written as O2) so you must change 1CuO to 2CuO.... now you have also 2 Cu at the right side and only 1 in the left side.... so you have to change from 1Cu to 2Cu.... now all is balanced. If you need more explanantions don't hesitate to return to me. ------------ Best regards,
2Cu + O2 = 2CuO
