Why do people send chain e-mails , and who makes a profit of it ?

The harder I work, the luckier I get.

It has been sugested that spamers use chain letter to harvest email addreses. Often you are required to fw the email to x other people and cc the originator. Or send an email to some address to receive a prize. Somebody on the other end receives the emails and then sells them.
