Cats who can't purr?

Are there some cats that can't Purr? Is it considered a genetic default? Are there surgeries that can fix this? Have any cats been through these surgeries before?

Hi

Are you sure your cat cannot purr as some cats purr really quietly - i think purring is just a vibration in the throat - a bit like how our voice box makes us speak - so it is possible that your cat has something wrong with that - but if it is healthy in every other way, it does not seem right to operate just so your cat can purr - it would be like giving someone an operation because they couldn't laugh.

If you are not sure, speak to your vet.

I hope this helps.

My Russian Blue rarely purrs audibly. At times when you might expect her to be purring, she does seem to vibrate as you pet her, but there is no sound. Once in a while there will be a barely audible purr. She is an affectionate, happy cat so I don't think that there is anything wrong with her.

Some cats purr so quietly that you can't hear them, but you can feel the vibrations through their chest and shoulders.:)

I have seen some cats can purr and some can't. I think this comes from geneti.
