At the highest level, declawing is the amputation of the last joint of the cat's paws and it is painful and hard on the cat no matter how old they are.

Declawing is performed under general anesthesia which is also more risky for older animals.  Kittens are normally done when they are over 3 to 4 months old.

Kittens heal more quickly and hospitalization is usually overnight but normally cats over 8 to 9 months's of age may require 2-3 days of hospitalization which also increasins the vet fee. Also this procedure is not advised for older cats since, as said before, cats claws are attached to the last joint therefore the whole last joint is removed.

3 thumbs up

kool kitty in arid arizona

i believe any kind of procedure such as spay/neuter and declawing is harder the older a cat gets.  also major changes such as new owners, moving, and pet additions or family additions are also harder the older a cat is.

Yes, it is much harder on them and not recommended. Please don't put your older kitty through that. Talk to your vet, or visit some pet websites for proper filing or trimming of the claws. You can also find solutions to saving your furniture from their claws by visiting pet websites or talking to your vet. I waited too long for my cat to be declawed, so now it's my responsibility to find the solutions needed for her and my house. Good luck.

yes it is very stressful for an older cat to be declawed, actually an older cat may never recover from the lost, it would be like the declawed cat would have to start learning to live all over again.

i believe it is wrong and very tramatic,to declaw any cat at any age.it is their natural defence mecanisim, and i think it is very cruel,by the way i have 6 cats they all have their claws you have to teach them not to scrath the things that are not allowed percistance is how it,s done.
