Cataracts

Cataracts have an affect on clear and sharp vision, but why do they have an affect on color perception?

Cataract causes the yellowing and opacification of the eyes' lenses. To simplify it- it's like a gray doc covering the eye- that way cause a change in the person's color perception, especially reducing the contrasts and lowering the amount of shades the person can see in each color.

With aging, the crystalline lens normally takes on a yellowish color that filters blue light. Apparently there is evidence suggesting that blue-wavelength light may damage the retina by contributing to the development of free radicals in the retina

You can read about it at this site that also discuses a cure.

As we age, our natural lenses become cloudy and take on a yellow hue. Consequently, our view of the world becomes "yellow" as though we were viewing it through a yellow filter. It happens so slowly that we aren't aware of it. If you have a lens implant in one eye, however, you will be able to cover one eye at a time and notice the difference in colors.

100 thumbs up

I enjoy using Yedda to ask and answer medical questions. I previously worked as a nurse but am now based from home - having just completed a long spell of breast cancer treatment.

Life has also been busy lately after the arrival of our new puppy called poppy. She's a black labarador retriever and drives us all crazy at times but we just adore the buzz she brings to the house. Last week she caused me a shoulder injury by tugging when out walking - but I can forgive that for the fun she brings. Other sites I like to visit are:

Its a feature of the change in the nature of the lens as the cataract develops

The lens filters out certain colors due to changes brought on by the cataracts themselves.
