My Cat Won't Quit Clawing The Leather Couch! (All Advice Welcome!)

My cat won't quit scratching the couch! We have exhausted every alternative to declawing ( cat posts, kitty condo, catnip, spray bottle, cardboard, bad smelling sprays,....) He just enjoys watching us get upset about his couch clawing. Please help. I am totally against declawing, my boyfriend isn't. It's HIS couch and our cat. I feel I am losing this battle against declawing. If you have a miracle in your pocket that can help, please share! I am willing to try anything humane. Thank you !

The worst solution to this problem is declawing. The common belief is that declawing is just like trimming fingernails, but it could be more wrong than that. The cat's nails are a vital part for his survival, behavior, and balance. Amputating them might lead to behavioral problems, worse than the scratching problem you are facing now.

You should create for your cat an alternative clawing post. It should be similar as possible to the old one. My tip is to simply get an old couch you don't care about, place it next to your original couch and try to attract your cat to it by playing on it and rewarding him each and every time he plays on it.

Gradually you can take the new clawing post to a remote spot in the house, but only after the cat got used to clawing only on his post.

Clean the couch throughly. Cover the couch with a couch r sofa cover. Roll up a tennis ball size of news paper and every time U see him clawing, throw the paper at him. This takes his attention away from the clawing and he may divert to the paper ball. U have to be presistant ( as u would a child) in this activity. When company comes take the covers off. Your scent may pose a factor also, you may want to try other seating for a week and see what happens. He may be bored. let him outside as much as you can. You can go to extreme and do like Everybody Loves Raymond's mother and put a full plastic cover on. Sometimes an older cat is set in his way and will continue his clawing. Shoo-ing him(older cat) r tapping him with a piece of paper (tube form)may make him leave home. A kitten r younger cat can be taught eaiser in most cases and then some of them from time to time will claw. Remember this, the CAT rules and U have to put up with things that r normal to him.. Thats why some people have DOGS!
