Cartilage health nutritionally

What are the nutritional concerns for strong cartilage? i.e. What types of foods should be avoided and what types of foods should be chosen for cartilage health? Protein helps cartilage, so should you ingest high protein? High protein also produces gout which exacerbates bone/cartilage.
