Make Your Computer Run Faster
Soon after you buy your computer or laptop you may find that it is running more slowly. This can be due to several factors such as too many saved Internet pages, an overloaded memory, or the need to defragment the memory. Here are some steps you can take to make your computer run faster and more efficiently.
Step 1
Run a Disk Cleanup to remove unwanted files from your PC. Click on the "Start" menu, select the Accessories folder and then select "System Tools".
-
Step 2
Click "Disk Cleanup". A pop-up menu will appear. Select "Drive C" and then click "Okay".The "Disk Cleanup" will provide a list of possible files to delete, such as files stored in the Recycle Bin or temporary Internet files. If you choose "Okay" the Disk Cleanup will remove these files from your computer.
-
Step 3
Defragment your computer. Essentially, this takes files in the memory and stacks them together so there are no holes to take up space. This doesn't affect your files, but makes your computer run faster.
-
Step 4
Click on the "Start" menu, select the "Accessories folder" and then "System Tools". Click "Disk Defragmenter". A pop-up menu will appear. If you have Vista, you will be told if your computer needs a disk defrag. If it does, push 'Defragment Now". Older versions of Windows will ask you which drive you want to defrag.
-
Step 5
Choose "C" and then "Defragment". This process can take a few minutes to several hours.
-
Step 6
If you have tried Step 1 and 2 with little to no results, you may need to check your memory. Click "Start" and then click "Computer". A screen will come up with information telling you how full your memory is. If it is over halfway full, you may want to get rid of some of the larger files on your computer, such as music and photo files. These can be stored on a USB memory stick to free up your computer's memory.
