I'm guessing it stands for 'common era'. I'm sure some who really knows will show up soon and answer, since I will refer this to OronD.
Profitbob is correct, it stands for Common Era. It was instituted by Jewish scholars who felt uncomfortable using the standard BC (Before Christ) and AC (After Christ). In Jewish texts CE replaces AC and BCE replaces BC.
