It depends what you're actually trying to burn. If you want to put some files on CD then you can simply use drag-n-drop to drag the needed files to the burner drive (eg let's say you're trying to copy all files in a directory \backup to CD and your CD-burner is drive D: - just drag the files over drive D: in Windows Explorer). Once you have any files dragged (or copied there is fine too) - you'll see Windows display a message that there are files ready to be written to the CD. Keep repeating the process until you copy all of the needed files to the burner drive. When you're ready to actually burn - right-click on the drive (D: in this example) and select Write Files to CD. Of course you'd need to make sure you have a CD in the drive and the rest is automatic. If you're trying to burn a music CD - I'd recommend either using Windows Media Player or Real Player and it's pretty intuitive. Alternatively you could purchase Nero software that does a good job. There are many packages available... the trick is to figure out what you're planning to do and then research what package would work well, in terms of features, cost and ease of use. But for basic copying of files to CDs - built-in software in Windows is simple, but does the job.

There is a nice tutorial in Microsoft's site explaining how to burn CDs using Windows XP's built in CD burning support.

You can check it out here

Regarding a free burning software, I heard some good things about CDBurnerXP Pro which is free and can also burn DVDs.

http://www.cdburnerxp.se/ - this one is free; you can also use the trial version of NeroBurningRome (www.nero.com ), which is considered as one of the best software for burning CD-s.
