Protests in Burma

Does the fact that the current protests in Burma are led by monks give the protests a better chance of succeeding, compared to the protests in 1988 which were led by students and failed after the government killed thousands of people?

Could be. There's a lot of respect for the monks in Burma, both by the people and by members of the government, and some people are expecting that this will make the masses join the monks in the coming days and the government will be less enthusiastic to start shooting the protesters than it was in 1988. Interesting times in Burma.
