Aham Brahmasmi

Although the history of"Burma/Myanmar" is repeated with changing names, for them "Name is everything" and they strongly belive that "one's attitude follows one's name". There are instances where in people have changed their names for reasons such as this.

Many linguists feel that the name is spelled as "Myanmar", its actually pronounced as "Bhama".   And this region is associated with the Land of Brahma ( One of the Gods in  Hindu religion). This region was associated with Hinduism and Buddhism since ages. Slowly the land of Brahma got manipulated in to Burma... And the Britishers officialy made it as Burma.

As Usual, any nationalistic movement try to remove/address issues such as this. Hence the ruling government(which is actually a military ) changed its name to " Union of Myanmar" from the earlier "Union of Burma".

I was late for work this morning, because I got stuck in Zeno's paradox.

The name Burma was originally chosen by the British, when they established a colony there. In 1989 the military regime that was in power decided to review all the place names, and change them to something that was less connected with the British. The original name of the country was Myanmar, so they chose this as the new name.

The military junta which seized power in Burma in 1988 decided to change the country's name from Burma to Myanmar most likely because in the native Burmese language, the country is known as Myanmar, whereas the name Burma comes from the elite of the country, and that was the group overthrown by the military.
