Love is the battery of life....

Hi,

There are several possible reasons:
1.  The filter is too weak for the volume of
the aquarium.  That's the most probable
     reason.
2.  The filter is not clean (and doesnt do it's
     job).
3.  The aquarium is exposed to too much
     direct sun.
4.  Too many fishes per the volume.
5.  The aquarium doesn't get enought light.
6.  Organic stuff is getting decay on the
     ground (grass, leaves, etc).
Best regards,

I'll add one more to what Oron mentioned.

You might be over feeding them. The remaining food sinks to the bottom and decays and results in water turning brown.
