I actually think her downfall was her cheating on Justin Timberlake. He was the glue holding her together, at least that's how it appeared. After they split, she started flirting with "danger," wearing more promiscuous outfits, going out with people who influenced her in the wrong direction and spending endless amounts of time in the clubs getting drunk (and probably high). Everything else has been downhill since then.
