I think that long distance relationships can work if both people want them to work and if both people care enough to put the effort in.  That means phone calls, visits, emails, etc.  It also depends how long term this is.  If it's just a few months and then you plan to live closer to one another, than I think that if you want it, this is something that you can get past and live through.  If neither one of you has any plans to move to the other's town so that you can be together, than I think that there's a bigger problem there that exists.  In that case, it would seem to me that neither of you are dedicated enough to the relationship.  I think you guys need to talk and make these decisions together.
