Books on Philosophy for Newbies

Can any of you recommend good books on Philosophy for a person starting to study Philosophy?

I specifically want books that are on a university level so I'll want to continue  studying I'll be on the same area, knowledge and terms with a freshmen that is majoroing in philosophy.

Thanks for the link joelorr.

I've followed your link to Amazon and the user reviews there are divided between "good read for someone without any prior knowledge" to "offensive to the intelligence".

Have you read the book?

God isn't mad at you.

I did not finish it, but used it for research when I was doing some writing that required me to refer to different schools of philosophy. So along with some actual Plato, Kant, Hobbes, and some others, it gave me enough to make me feel that I had enough of a grasp of the major issues, dichotomies, and characters so as not to sound like a complete idiot myself. I liked the writing style, and from my own newbie-ish position, it seemed to treat opposing viewpoints reasonably fairly.

 Hope this helps!

"Occam's Razor, Laplace's Demon"

I have found the "Introducing" series to be a good place to start. They carry many individual philosophers and an "introducing Philosophy".

You'll have to be able to get past the graphic novel feel of the series, but they are written by world renowned academics.
