It's not the mountain we conquer... but ourselves

I think that there are boarding schools with amazing education, and usually they offer better extracurricular activities, which is definitely a plus.  I wish sometimes that my parents sent me to boarding school.  Also, kids have a much healthier social life and learn how to be away from their parents.  Of course there are boarding schools with problems, and they cost a ton of money.  There are plusses and minuses.

I attended Parochial Boarding School both in Maine and New Jersey in the mid to latter 60's.  My Freshman & Sophmore years were spent in Maine, until the school was forced to close it's doors for financial reasons.  My Parents then found a school in New Jersey which was closer to home in New York.

With absolute certainty, I can attest to the fact that what I was learning in my Freshman and Sophmore years in Private Boarding School, others in the public school system were lucky they were learning that in Junior or Senior years.  My Junior and Senior years were equally challenging with much of the material learnt taught in College.

Not only were we taught Academics, but we were also taught various business courses.  In addition, we learned how to socialize with others from all over the Country and the World as we had many foreign students.

The extra curricular activities were quite diversified and we were encouraged to pursue these activities in addition to our basic education requirements.

I realize that not every family can afford to send their child(ren) to Boarding School, but I am very grateful that I had the opportunity that I did.  I feel that it made me a better person...the person I am today!

The present Public School System is overwhelmed, overcrowded and underfinanced.  With Private Schools, specifically Boarding Schools, there is a maximum amount of students accepted which keeps the Instructor to Pupil ratio small and personal.  Without a doubt, there is no argument that Private Schools (Boarding or Day), provide a much better education to it's students.

Look at the stat's ...yes, they do offer a much higher quality educational experience and graduates have a much, much better chance of getting into top-tier colleges/universities.....if your child is academically qualified, and you can afford it....it's a good option.....many foreign nationals send their kids to these schools precisely so they can have an advantage in admissions to U.S. elite colleges/universities...it's no secret. I have a child in a great boarding/prep school who was heavily recruited by many Ivies and now has received nomination to two of our military service academies (West Point and Naval Academy)....and no, we are not a "trust-fund family"....we are working parents who sacrificed for our kids education.

I agree that boarding schools are an amazing education because of the personal attention that the school can give a student.  You don't have as many reluctant students as you would in public schools.  Most students want to be there and are serious about their studies and that is key.

I am not all sure about boarding schools being the best. I do know my daughter is at the very best of the best private high schools in OC CA. It is a private college prep high school and it just does not get any better in my opinon. You need to find a balance...public NO, Private YES, Boarding...not sure...

Is this a trick question? Of course they offer a better education. Contrast the percentage of boarding school grads to public school grads who are admitted to top-flight colleges.

I would love to be able to send my kids to a private high school, but 3 X 33 = $99,000 a year, frankly above what we can afford!  I wouldn't want them to be boarders, just day students as I think being WITH your family is very important.  I think that the college years are the perfect time to move into a dorm and away from your parents.
