Blogging platform

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best blog platform out there ?

I'm thinking about doing something instant like Blogger or Livejournal because of the simplicity and good user interface.

Then again, I don't like being tied down to a default layout, would like server access, maybe adding forums etc.... I've used WordPress in the past and love it, but i'm a beat low on budget and don't want to spend too much on hosting and registering a domain.

Any recommendations or thoughts?

have you tried wordpress.com? you can open a new account for free.

you can choose from many themes and add lots of widgets - the problem is you can't add a forum or have access to the server.

when you mean low on budget - that means you are looking for a free solution?

Google's Blogger is to be changed soon - it looks pretty good. See my review :

I've been in search myself and I can tell you if it's for installing on a server I would choose WordPress, if it's hosted Blogger.

Blogger because it seems to be the only one that enables me to completly re-style as I like. The beta version is a bit more limited and seems to have some bugs but it's still, I think, the ones that has the most liberty.

Wordpress because there are many cool plug-ins and templates, all the nicest blogs I've seen all use wordpress, but I have not tried.

NB: If someone knows of any hosted version with as much access to the template as Blogger, please leave a comment. - Thanks

I like hosting at

http://www.hostingrails.com/, they have a free after rebate plan good for one year which is quite nice. I run Radiant which is a Ruby on Rails CMS that can work for blogging. But you could run Wordpress on this site if you wanted to as well. I'd host your blog yourself unless you just have to get it going tommorrow. I'd think about Radiant, WordPress or even Typo for blogging as far as the actual application.

You can also create free blog sites with adsense revenue at http://www.com-x2.com/free-blog-adsense-revenue-sharing . Com-x2.com has a very simple user interface so it's a great place for newbie bloggers.
