Blogging discretion: What's it look like?

What do you think are the parameters for respecting privacy when you write a blog intended for friends and family, but open to the public?

Shrek: Well it's no wonder you don't have any friends.
The Donkey: Wow, only a true friend would be that truly honest.

I think that you should talk to your family about it and see how much they care.  Most likely, it'll just be family that's looking at the blog you make about your family anyway.  So, after you talk with them, just keep their wishes in mind.  I don't think it should be too much of a problem.  Also, talk to them about which pictures you decide to put on the blog.

"Even the most ordinary man can make a difference, he just has to believe he can."

Hi MikeVanEerden:

Voila!  The trick word here is "public."  There can never be any privacy when a blog is open, especially if it has RSS feed, which is software that quickly implants it throughout the Internet to the world of peering eyes.

Shrekypooo makes some good points. You may want to also consider other issues:

Some sights like typepad.com allow you to select your options where only your circle of friends have access, but it does not become public.  Sadly, we do live in a world of sickos, and many people do not realize the situations they can become involved in or how personal information can be used against them.  Precaution should always be a primary concern.

It is not wise to post anything that may comeback to haunt you or which you consider private.  Why?  Consider these reasons:

1.  It's nobody's business.

2.  Whether something written is private or business. . .its review creates a precedent as to the validity, background and credibility in business - and, of the character and wisdom of an individual.  One just never knows what might be found.

3. The unintended information or pictures downloaded from public sites can end up on a site like You Tube creating havoc in the lives of  individuals that can be felt years down-the-road as government agencies, employers and organizations are using the internet to screen backgrounds of potential candidates in every aspect of the world of commerce.  Individuals are surfing sites to see if their baby sitter is of question.  Colleges are doing the same; denying scholarships and college entrance.

One of the great quotes is from the character played by Tom Hanks in the movie Forrest Gump:  "Stupid is what stupid does."  Yes it is the stupid who has gotten into trouble - who will get into trouble - and who infinitely does get into trouble.

Cover your bases, keep it free from potential embarrassing moments and vulgarities and then enjoy the wonderment of Internet technology and the interaction that can enhance family member's lives and bring times of closeness from far away distances.
