Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt ...

Hi,

the fact that your business is a local one is all in your favor, and yes a blog in principle is a good web marketingt tool in most cases, although there are always exceptions to the general rule.

There are blogs of local restaurants just to name one businessm, aI am recommending my hotel Clients to start blogging immediately as it will be a strategic competitive advantage for those who will embrace the new approach to the web earlier rather than later.

Be warned that a blog is not something that you buy off the shelf, put online and bang you're famous - it's a lot of very hard work and thinking. If you're not prepared to put up with this kind of effort then leave it alone and don't consider blogging - it will only hurt you.

There are many considerations on blogging that are beyond the scope of this reply, but in a nutshell, a blog can provide significant boost to your online visibility if done properly. One last thing, if you blog well rest assured you wont be needing advertising, you'll get plenty of quality traffic on your web site Smile

Hope this helps,

Sante

Yes, a blog can be used in this way, and the first response was right on the money.

One thing you should consider is who are your customers.  Do they find you by searching on the web?  Would you like customers to find you through web searches?

The nice thing about blogging is that you can reach potential customers in what seems a very personal way.  You can write about your products and services.  You can write about your ties to the town and to the community in ways that people might not see through traditional advertising.  Mainly, you can write with your own style and voice, rather than relying on the formal prose of marketing materials.  (Marketing isn't "bad", it's just different and has a longer lead time than blogging.)

Your comment that a blog needs to be advertised is true, and it would be worthwhile hearing from other physical business owners how they have managed this aspect.  At the very least: your blog needs to be linked on your website.  And your website needs to be promoted in your standard promotional material.
