Bleeding in gums caused by Listering mouthwash

Does anyone have this same problem? Yesterday I used Listerine mouthwash to rinse my mouth for a long time (+/- 10 minutes) to wait for all the burning sensations in the mouth to pass away. Because I thought if you have burning sensations in your mouth while rinsing then it means that there are still germs in your mouth being killed. However, today my upper gums became somewhat swollen and a couple of places are bleeding. Why is this so? Does anyone know?

If you look at the instructions on the bottle, you'll see that it is only safe to have listerine in your mouth for one minute.  It doesn't matter that the burning is taking place, you are basically poisoning your mouth to keep it there for 10 minutes.  I think that you should really see a doctor because you might have caused yourself damage to your mouth.  I would be more careful from now on and make sure to read the instructions before using any sort of product.

I had bleeding gums for a few years and when I complained to my stupid dentist, he told me I was brushing too hard.  I ended up having to have gum surgery to save my teeth!  The reason you have bleeding gums is because you have gum disease.  Once you have it, you will need to DEAL with it without fail. There are a couple things you can do immediately.  First of all, stop using Listerine - too much alchohol, which is very hard on your gums.  Go to the drug store and get a product called Peroxyl.  Swish with it two to three times a day for a few days.  Be sure not to swollow ANY of the mouthwash, as it has hydroperoxide in it, which is toxic.  But hydroperoxide really does the trick.  Second, start flossing!  If you can't handle flossing, get something called a Butler pick and pick between your teeth after eating.  You should also run the tip of the pick underneath your gumline on the outside and inside of your mouth.  Next, once things have settled down, get to a good dentist and tell him about the bleeding gum issue.  A good dentist will check your gum issues and keep them under control.  If you don't deal with this now, believe me you will be dealing with it later - with gum abcesses and lost teeth.  Hope this helps!

The lining of your mouth is extremely sensitive and that is why Listerine instructs you to keep the solution in your mouth for no more than a minute. Since you kept it in your mouth for so much longer your mouth inner lining has become extremely sore and painful. You might want to try rinsing your mouth a few times a day with a soothing oxygenating solution, such as made by Vince or Colgate. But the best advice is to speak to your dentist or physician.

I found that rinsing your mouth with lukewarm salt water (you take salt and melt it in hot water and then wait a bit for it to cool) helps to aaleviate bleeding gums and pain, but I'm not sure this would work for you.
