This is from wikipedia:

The word is derived from the word for tribute paid by English and Scottish border dwellers to Border Reivers in return for immunity from raids. This tribute was paid in goods or labour (reditus nigri, or "blackmail"): the opposite is blanche firmes or reditus albi, or "white rent" (denoting payment by silver).

In other words, it's pretty similar to paying for the local gangster so that he would leave you alone.

blackmail also stands for people who know something about you or have something of yours and they want there way when they ask you something and if they dont get there way then they will go back and tell ppl what you told that person that you didnt want to get out or they won't give you back what you let them use.

I guess it just called black mail cause its has something to do with bad things, and we all know that black is also known as dark that we can't see nothing. . . its like a written note that maybe do bad to you but you don't know what would that be.

black refers to bad deeds or things that are accepted, mail is for mail literally. so its called black mail or bad mails.
