A biologist analyzes the dna sequences in three different primates.  The biologist finds that primates "a" and "b" have almost exactly the same DNA sequences.  the DNA sequences in primate "c" are significantly different from those of primate "a" and primate "b".  This information allows the biologist to infer that:

1.  primates a and b are more closely related to each other than either is to primate c

2.  all 3 primates appeared on earth at about the same time

3.  either primate a or primate b must be a direct ancestor of primate c

4.  primate c must have been the ancestor of both primate a and primate b.

"What does it profit a man to gain the world if he loses his soul?"

I guess the biologist could be allowed to infer anything.  If they inferred number 1, they would have the best chance of being right, but whether the evidence actually bears this out is another matter.  The closest relation by dna to a lotus is a sycamore tree.  There may be many more dna sequences uncharted than charted, and in reality, one test on three separate animals from three species isn't much to go on.

You're welcome.  I hope it helped and didn't muddy the issue too much.

BioVisions - The Inner Life of the Cell

The Inner Life of a Cell, an three-minute animation created in NewTek LightWave 3D and Adobe After Effects for Harvard biology students, wont draw the kind of box office crowds that more ferocious˜and furrier˜digital creations did last Christmas. But it will share a place along side them in SIGGRAPH's Electronic Theatre show, which will run for three days during the 33rd annual exhibition and conference in Boston next month. Created by XVIVO, a scientific animation company near Hartford, CT, the animation illustrates unseen molecular mechanisms and the ones they trigger, specifically how white blood cells sense and respond to their surroundings and external stimuli.
