I agree with jkgrandma. This might be the time to go cold turkey. Not only for his teeth's sake, but for overall hygiene. He will cry for a while, but in the long run it will be worth it (dentist bills).
The search for people who can answer your question continues for as long as needed - until you find the answer you were looking for.
