On July 15 Paris will launch a bike renal service, after a similar service has been working successfully in Lyon for two years. Do you think this service will have similar success in Paris, where the Metro is much more developed?
I'm expecting the bike rental system to be a huge success. Essentially, cyclists will have free use of these bikes but there will be checks and balances in place to prevent abuse. Also, the private company that has the contract (JC Decaux) is profiting from the bus shelter advertising contract with the City of Paris, not from rents on the bikes. Thus, the program has a solid funding base that will allow bikes to be maintained and stocked throughout the city.

The Paris bike rental program has been so popular that demand regularly outstrips supply. Even a variety of cities in the USA are now looking for ways to get a similar program going.
