I would use large to describe an object larger than the average and I would use big to describe an object significantly larger than the average.

When life presents a challenge, take your shot.

I think that large is a more formal word.  In normal language, I would use the word "big, bigger, or biggest" before I would describe something as "large".... either way though.  The two words mean the same thing.
