Which version of the Bible is the easiest to understand and yet is also the most accurately translated from the original texts?

This issue is far more complex than most people could answer with any degree of reliability. Without being learned in the languages the Bible was written in or having access to the original texts, we can only go by what others say.

I found a website that seemed rather informative on the issue. In short...most translations seem to be accurate...it boils down to your preference. If you are not familiar with Greek and Hebrew language and customs of the time...a more literal translation would not be good for you...plus, literal translations tend to not be as 'readable'.

As a novice to the Bible, I found the NIV (New International Virsion) extremely readable. But it lacked literary appeal...the language was almost too simple. Now I use the NAB (New American Bible) because there aren't a lot of versions available that include the deuterocanical books. It is also what is used in my church.

I'm not really familiar with any other translations.

Respectfully, they do refer to other translations. And as far as Jehovah's Witnesses are concerned, have you ever talked to any of them to confirm their beliefs? I did this and they are harmless and proved to me personally that they're teachings are from the Bible. At least they try to follow Christ to the best of their ability and are advocates of God's kingdom. They do the same things the early Christians did in Acts, Matthew, Luke. They go from "house to house" and teach voluntarily like the early followers of Christ. This I have seen for myself. There are many misconceptions about. They go to the people to help them. The only way to tell what a true Christian is would be to examine the requirements in the Bible. You can't go by other "chrisitans" because all of their beliefs differ.

Interesting to note:

Yes, as a matter of fact I have examined the Jehovah's Wittnesses' beliefs quite thouroghly. The first thing that they told me was that there is no Hell and the second was that Jesus wasn't nailed to a cross...He was nailed to an "up-right stake" which completely crontradicts every Bible that I have ever read. Their version of the Bible contradicts every version of the Bible in existance. I have read their version cover to cover and compared it verse by verse to the King James Version, New International Version, New Living Translation, the New American Bible (Catholic version), and the Contemporary English Version. The Jehovah's Wittness' version contradicts the versions of the Bible that I compared it to over 1000 times and those contradictions are in the areas of the Bible where all of the other denominations are in total agreement. In the Jehovah's Wittness' Bible even the teachings of Christ are different from what He teaches in all the other Bibles on Earth and they do not teach that He is going to come again to rapture the church before finally setting up His kingdom on Earth. They teach that nothing in Revelation will happen because to them it isn't a book of prophesy but rather a history book...talking about things that have already happened 2000 years ago. Every Christian I know will tell you that Revelation depicts events that are soon to happen on Earth and that Jesus will rapture His church before the events of Revelation are set in motion. Jehovah's Wittnesses do not believe that. I went to school with a bunch of them and they tried to convert me, but made the mistake of being totally honest with me about what their "church" teaches.

Hi Jesusfreak! Smile

I would like to also suggest getting an Amplified Bible. What it does is elaborate a lot on the written word, and gives a much deeper explanation and understanding of what is being said.. I think you'd like having one around.. in addition.

It seems like no matter what I say, you will maintain the position you have re: them and though I cannot change your mind, I can defend them. I have had many questions about the Bible and all of them have been answered clearly and concisely no matter what translation I've used when speaking with them. Their Bible is not contradictory - do you have specific incidents/scriptures/questions? You have to remember the history of the King James version which is not a true translation from the original manuscripts. You need only to read the Forward in KJ to find this out. Secondly, the original manuscript uses the translated word stauros for stake which was used by people during the time Jesus was on earth. People who later translated the Bible inserted cross. History has proven that a cross was not used (please read any encylopedia). Thirdly, they do believe that the book of Revelation was written in signs and symbols and is truly a book of the future and that soon the events in Revelation will happen as it is a book of prophecy. They also do not convert, they try to teach you the truth because so many people are confused and have their teaching mingled with doctrines that have absolutely no biblical support and proof.  And, if you can find one perfect religion with all perfect followers please let me know because I will run to it. I am not on yedda to argue or debate. I hope you have a good day.

Amplified Bible? Never heard of it nor seen it. Where can I find a copy to read before I commit to buying a copy?

I'm glad that you're not on here to argue. Debating on the other hand is a very good (even excellent) way of exchanging ideas. All a debate is is stating your ideas, giving as much supporting points and evidence or reasons why you have the idea(s) that you have and letting other people ask you about them and tell you what their ideas are on a specific subject and you question them about their idea(s). The difference between an argument and a debate is that when you debate a subject...you always respect the other person's ideas, beliefs, ect. even though you may think that they're wrong on every point. Debating is how I come to understand other people's point of view and they come to understand mine. I don't want to argue with you about anything....debate on the other hand....that's a different story. We can do that and still respect each other and our ideas. But as far as being nailed to an up-right stake...anatomically speaking...the nails would have ripped right out of His hands. The hand bones are weak going from wrist to fingers and are strong going from side to side because in that direction...they compact against each other and become a solid mass of bone. going from wrist to fingers...the bones just slip to the side leaving nothing but skin, tendons and muscle to hold the nails in and that wouldn't hold anything in with that much weight applied to them. I have no doubt that the Romans tried that method at one point, but, learned from bitter experience (bitter for the condemed) that that method doesn't work. Anyway, we can debate anything...just not argue about it.

Hi. you can find an Amplified Bible at most Christian Book Stores. I'm sure that they would be happy to let you look through it, read it as long as you want to before commiting to buy it. Here is some of the Preface:

In 1958 The Lockman Foundation and Zondervan Publishing House issued the first edition of The Amplified New Testament after more than 20,000 hours of research and prayerful study. Some four years later the first of two Old Testament volumes appeared (The Amplified Old Testament, Part Two- Job to Malachi), followed in 1964 by the publication of The Amplified Old Testament, Part One- Genesis to Esther. The next year (1965) The Amplified Bible came out in one volume.

Now, twenty two years later, Zondervan Bible Publishers and The Lockman Foundation are pleased to present The Amplified Bible, Expanded Edition. The purpose of all the characters in the story of the making of The Amplified Bible is still relevant today; to communicate the Word of God to people and to exalt Jesus Christ. This has been the fourfold aim of The Lockman Foundation from the beginning. #1. These publications shall be true to the original Hebrew and Greek.  #2. They shall be grammatically correct.  #3. They shall be understandable to the masses.  #4. They shall give the Lord Jesus his proper place, the place which the Word gives Him.

I'll tell ya, as a Christian, I appreciate having a copy of this Ampified Bible in my home so much that I bought a Large print leather bound edition and had my Family name engraved on the cover!

By the way, I was raised as a Jehovah's Wittness. They really are very lovely people, interesting.  God Bless ya'll.
