Benzodiazepines oversensitivity

After an operation performed with anaesthesia i was told by the doctors that i was oversensitive to benzo diazepines and thus there was a problem with waking me up afterwards and should inform any medical personel about the fact. My question is: what does it really mean for me? I do not use any mediacations apart from contraceptives and occasional aspirin or painkiller.

Happy Valentine's. Play us a rose, you're organic, man.

Victims of circumstance owe it to fate. Victims of choice owe it to themselves.

What and how much were  you given?

What were the other anesthetic agents that were used?

unfortunatelly this is all I was told. It was a general anaesthesia introduced by injection due to knee operation.

Always ask questions and never settle for second best.

I am not sure why, at what point, or which bezodiazepine you were given.  However, the doctors obviously gave you one and it caused a problem with you waking up from anaesthia.  They probably do not know exactly what the problem is either.

However, to protect you in the future they told you to tell doctor's what happened so that they do no give you benzodiazepines because you may have a negative reaction.  It should be in your doctor's notes about "drugs allergic to" but other than warning the doctor, you may never come across this problem again.  Benzodiazepines are "controlled" substances like methodone and are usually used by psychiatrists to help the mental health of their patients.

CoolRed-head country girl, back to the simple life.

I agree you should always tell any doctor you are very sensitive to benzo's so they can control how much they give you and make very sure it is in your chart, it don't mean you can never have them just very small amounts. A regular person can take a 1 mg xanax you would have to start with 1/3 of one to see how sleepy it makes you. Taking xanax is a lot different than a anaesthiaologist puting you to sleep for surgery. If you don't need them don't take them. They can give you something that is not as strong if you should need that type of medication for some reason. You system is just as the doctor said, you are sensitive where some people could take 2 or 3 and it would just relax them or make them sleep well and wake up just fine. Keep you doctors up to speed with your sensitivity and it should be okay. Good luck
