How could Barack Obama register for non-existent selective service in 1979?

In an interview on ABC with George Stephanopoulis, Mr. Obama claims to have registered for selective service after graduation from high school in 1979 because he had to, at which time he thought of joining (ha ha) the military. How could he do this if the registration for selective service had been suspended during that year? Another piece of "made-up" history?

Obama said he thought about registering after graduation. He didn't say that he had to. He repeated it again tonight on the Fox network Obama/Mcain forum at Columbia College. If you are going to watch ABC with George Stephanopoulis, try and state the facts as they are said. He did not say that he had to register because of the draft. I watched Stephanopolis too, and I heard something entirely different from you. Were you watching a different ABC channel? If so, what country was it broadcasted from. I watched it here in the USA.
