I myself, 'dedicated' my children, I believe that it is when you bring your child/children to the church/place of worship to be part of its family; usually it's done while standing in front of the congregation and presenting by name your child/ren. And 'Baptism' for me is to be 're-born' in the Spirit by water, as John had been doing while waiting for the Son of Man-Jesus, the true baptizer of the Holy Spirit. Which nowadays can be done at the Fount, or even out at a lake or any place where there is water. I do hope I have been of help.
How can an infant dedicate himself verbally when he cannot speak? He cannot exercise faith which is a requirement of a true Christian; he cannot understand that Christ died for our sins nor can he/she possibly understand that baptism follows dedication. Christ dedicated himself when he was baptized by John the Baptist, therefore setting a pattern. Please read Matthew 3:13-17 where Jesus had a conversation, as an adult, with John the Baptist before he was immersed in water. Baby baptism started to appear on the scene after the death of Christ and his apostles (see The Encyclopedia Britannica-Vol. 3 Pg 84). Hope this helps.
You never say hello to you until you get it on the redline, overload. You never know what you can do until you try.

"Dedication" as in the Catholic and Lutheran liturgy, is where the parents "dedicate" themselves to their child and commit to bringing the child up in a calm and loving home, with the proper Christian example. If the child dies before he can decide for himself to follow God or to rebel, then God will accept that dedication as voluntary baptism in the name of Christ and the parents.
Baptism is a rite of passage into the Christian Church. To be binding, the Neophyte must be informed what it means to be a Christian, must accept Christ as Lord and Savior, and must commit to live the life of a Christian. The Pastor and Congregation then perform the rite, which may be immersion (dunking in clean water), aspersion (pouring clean water over the neophyte's scalp with a towel handy) or even sprinkling, ( just a few drops of water on the head of a person near death). In any case, it is an act of dignity and faith.
Just as in bathing, one must commit to living a clean and honest life. And just as in bathing, you know that you will get dirty again, and must once again bathe to get rid of the daily soil that you will incur, even working at a desk. So with sin: daily bathing and daily prayer are mandatory: God reads your thoughts. Just thinking a prayer will definitely get through. You may have to suffer the cionsequences of your actions, and bear a burden that seems most unfair, but that was the lesson you came here to learn.
We all did.
God remains the judge in any case. To transgress that rite is not an automatic bar from Heaven. God knows the heart. You need not confess your sins to a priest: confess them to God in secret, and He will forgive you openly.
