I am putting a doorway in a bearing wall on the second floor of a nalloon frame house. I have instructions on how to do it for a first floor install but am wondering if there are additional temporary supports required for a second floor application.
ALWAYS!! It is critical that you determine the direction of the ceiling joists. If they are running parallel to the doorway, then the header is not supporting the ceiling load. This does not mean that it might not be supporting the roof load through a support post. You will have to determine this by looking in the attic. Either way, this is a job that would require a building permit because you are making a structural change to your home. Check with the local building authorities.
